ONES TO WATCH: Bison Hunting

How many of you watched this year’s Brit awards? Shambles, wasn’t it. It was like watching an extremely tiresome table-tennis game between Adele and Ed Sheeran. I’m bored just thinking about it. Generally, Brits today seem to appreciate lukewarm sounds from mediocre artists and I thank my lucky stars that Newcastle hasn’t caught on to this musical epidemic. We have a sackful of exciting, fresh and above all unique talent, covering everything from folk to post-rock to metal and everything in between. Speaking of metal, enter Bison Hunting, a local 4-piece who we had the pleasure of welcoming into the studio last week at Hit The North East.

The band are currently preparing for their first come-back gig since taking a break in 2011. Their shows in 2010 caused quite a stir so for them, the pressure is on to match the success. Their most recent tracks are up on their Soundcloud (links below) and if they are anything to go by, this will be one sweaty, energetic and frankly excellent show. They’ve been previously described as a “sleazed up, scuzzed up sex fiend Joy Division” but on first listen to “Eat You Alive”, I reckon there’s a touch of The Bronx in there too and I’m enjoying it! Filthy bass and aggressive drums make this particular track a hard one to turn off (and great for a bit of aggressive driving too, might I add, although we don’t advocate that sort of behaviour here – OBVS). Above all, they sound fearless and forcible; a welcome exit from the dull-as-dishwater goings on in the charts these days.

So when can you see them? Well, they’ll be tearing up The Dog & Parrot this coming Thursday (March 29th) along with the tremendous Apache Viking and Styles Make Fights (both also HTNE alumni, I might add!) and if you can make it, I’d certainly advise you to. It’s a tremendous line-up of 3 of our region’s most exciting emerging bands and for only £3, why wouldn’t you attend?

Here’s a peek at what you can expect to hear from Bison Hunting on the night:

WHAT’S ON: EASTER 2012 (PART 1)

Due to the fact that I’ve been atrociously lazy with this blog of late, I’ve decided to come in strong with a series of posts on what Newcastle-dwellers can expect from our fair city this Easter. The first bank holiday of the year is something to be celebrated; the weather is better and we have four glorious days off to blitz our March pay-packet and be generally irresponsible. Wonderful!

As far as I’m concerned, the only answer to Thursday the 5th of April is DADA: Easter at the Old Music Hall. Regular attendees of DADA events will note that there were to be no more parties at this brilliantly unique venue, however thanks to a bit of lethargic planning from Newcastle City Council, we are blessed once again. Dark, spacious and rough around the edges; there couldn’t be a better place to host the DADA Easter special. The Last Waltz fellas will be warming up your ears and feet nicely and then handing over to headliner Marcus Marr (DFA/New Finger) until very, very late in the AM.

I’d strongly advise you to get a ticket before the event if you want to ensure your space on the dance floor; whispers about how excellent this DADA event will be have been travelling like wild-fire and for good reason. Unfortunately the £6 early-bird tickets have now SOLD OUT, so the £8 advance is your best bet. Just click here to purchase!

Marcus Marr is one of the most exciting new DJs/producers to grace the London club scene so it’s a real coup that he’s taking a trip up North just for us. This will be his first headline appearance in Newcastle and he embodies exactly what DADA is about; no fads – just good music, good people and interesting, out of the ordinary surroundings. Their parties at The Globe, The Jazz Cafe, The Shed and The Godfather (see what I mean about unusual surroundings!) have cemented DADA as something the discerning clubber should look forward to.

You’d be daft to miss it.

HEAVEN ON THE SIXTH FLOOR.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on a personal quest to find the best Sunday Roast in Newcastle. Having sampled the delights (and frights!) at some of the city’s finest food emporiums, it was time to pull out all the stops and head to Six at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts. Since being taken over by Fresh Element (headed up by award-winning chef Richard Sim) in 2009, the restaurant has managed to shake off its somewhat pretentious and stuffy reputation to emerge at the forefront of our regions’ local treasures, with a menu that’s accessible to all and with prices that reflect this positive change.

A trip up the glass elevators takes you to the gloriously light and spacious restaurant, with spectacular views of both Newcastle and Gateshead quays and a relaxed yet buzzing atmosphere that envelopes you as soon as you arrive. We were greeted instantly and shown to an impressive lounge to peruse the menu and order a drink while our table was prepared. We chose a light and delicious bottle of Prosecco NV (Vetriano, Italy) at £25.00 as it was a semi-special occasion but there’s a multitude of wines and beers to suit all tastes. Staff are knowledgeable and attentive yet unobtrusive, happy to make suggestions and ask questions to help customers make an informed decision, and all are comfortable guiding their customers through the extensive wine list.

The decor compliments the notion of endless space; with floor to ceiling glass windows, a well-stocked and accessible bar area, large white tables juxtaposed with black chairs and plenty of fresh flower arrangements. The music is easy-listening, a mixture of electronica and down-tempo jazz, set at just the right volume so that conversation takes precedence. It’s impeccably clean and organised, the table linen and cutlery are clearly of excellent quality and it all this wasn’t enough, it’s surrounded by one of the best views in the North. Six is one extremely stylish crow’s nest over the Tyne.

The Sunday menu is simple and luxurious in equal measure. Ingredients are sourced only in Britain and each dish is described in a way that will appeal to the most hardened of foodies, as well as being easy to understand by those with less of a critical palette. Starters are a very reasonable £4, with dishes ranging from the fail-safe Soup of the Day (Jerusalem Artichoke, which was unfortunately sold out), Pigeon Breast, Smoked Trout, a Mussel and Chorizo Chowder and Smoked Mackerel Pâté. I opted for the trout which was served with a vibrant beetroot purée and toasted brioche with a sprinkling of fresh rocket. The trout was beautifully fresh and uncomplicated, enhanced further by the other subtle elements of the dish, and the portion size was perfect for kicking off my culinary experience. The other members of my party went for the Pigeon Breast (which I’ll admit, I was too afraid to try given that I’m notoriously petrified of pigeons!) and the Smoked Mackerel Pâté which was served with croutons and beetroot chutney – again, both dishes perfectly sized, beautifully presented and well received by my companions.

The main course menu is bold and laden with tempting options; I couldn’t resist the Wallington Estate Roast Beef (all main courses are £12.00 however the beef has a £2.50 supplement added – totally worth it!) The meat is served slightly pink, with hands-down the best roast potatoes I’ve tasted in a long time (possibly cooked in duck fat, I should have asked but that’s my guess), a large and fluffy Yorkshire pudding, mashed potato and a selection of seasonal veg including broccoli, cauliflower, mangetout and cabbage. The gravy is more of a jus really; quite thin in consistency but bursting with flavour and not a lump in sight!

The portion seemed to be much more than my £14.50 worth and as much as I struggled, I was determined to consume every last delicious bite. Be warned though: you may panic and think you have no room left for dessert after a Six roast! I also got to pinch a bit of lamb from another plate on my table and can confirm it is equally as impressive as the roast beef. There were definite hints of rosemary and the meat was tender and juicy, accompanied by a home-made mint sauce and all the other standard Sunday Roast trimmings. The menu also offers roast loin of pork, chestnut-crusted pheasant and duck egg with black truffle, potato and thyme rosti and wild mushroom ragout for the vegetarians out there.

I have to admit that dessert isn’t really my “thing” and I could have quite happily had two starters instead, however on this occasion I took the plunge despite the fact the seams on my clothes were about to burst and I was slipping ever so slightly into the most glorious of food comas. I ordered the blackcurrant sorbet and it was utterly divine; very refreshing, zesty and a light option in comparison to the rest of what’s on offer. I also got to sample the Coffee & Hickory Cheesecake which is any dessert-lover’s dream, lots of cream and richness with plenty of flavour: in short, totally indulgent! All of the desserts on the menu are priced at £4.00 which is startlingly reasonable and keeps things simple. The portions are a bit on the large side but maybe that’s just me, given that I’m not usually a dessert-eater and I was already fit to explode even before taking on my sorbet.

I wish I had taken photographs of the dishes because everything that was put before me was presented so beautifully, but maybe you should treat yourself this New Year and try Six out for yourself? It’s an outstanding restaurant on so many levels: exceptional food, a pleasant ambience and lovely staff who are great ambassadors for Fresh Element. The menus are seasonal so change every couple of months, so to me that’s as good an excuse as any to make frequent trips in the future and try all of their delicious offerings. You can access the menus and see other reviews on the Six website (see links below) as well as special offers, vouchers and an online booking system. I must recommend that you book before going there, particularly for Sunday lunch, as I imagine it’s not the sort of restaurant you can take a chance on there being tables available and rightly so: Six is a serious treat!

2011 IN REVIEW – Courtesy of WordPress.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 5,400 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5 trips to carry that many people.

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY OCLOCK CHRISTMAS.

To me, Christmas is exciting and annoying in equal measure… Choosing presents for the parents is easy enough, but what about that brother of yours in his late teens who has just grasped the notion of street credit? Or his girlfriend? Oh, and not forgetting the Secret Santa between your group of friends, where you need something that’s suitable for all? See what I mean….?!

Happily, most people can tell the time and pretty much everyone has wrists so why not get involved and purchase one of the delightful time-pieces from Oclock for your loved ones. Manufactured in Italy and made of durable and hypoallergenic silicone, these colourful little beauties are inter-changeable and only cost £25! With an array of shades available and the ability to buy straps and faces separately, you can swap to your heart’s content and have a completely different looking watch every time you do.

The watches come in small, medium and large, no catch is required as the strap simply stretches over the hand to sit nicely on the wrist – no hassle! I have two of these and can confirm that the silicone does not lose it’s stretch and become loose, so the watch constantly looks brand new. If this isn’t enough to convince you then check this out; even Rizzle Kicks are fans after the team at Celebrity Juice gave OClocks out to their very special guests (JLS, Holly and Fearne, Rufus Hound and Peter Andre to name but a few!) Check this:

UNIT44 Presents: ‘A Decade of Aerosol Poetry’ by Laser 3.14

September 29th – November 1st at UNIT 44, Hoults Yard, NE6 2HL.

Tyneside dwellers are in for yet another cultural treat thanks to the luminaries at Unit 44, Hoults Yard. Kicking off this Thursday, the latest exhibition from Dutch artist Laser 3.14 will be a celebration of his work over the last 10 years, from his international street-art to the arrival of his book “Are you reading me?” and a plethora of iconic poetic statements in between.

Featuring limited runs of 10 prints featuring the best of his poetic offerings, the exhibition will be Laser’s first show in the North-east and I can’t think of anywhere better to play host to it. Some of his original works will also be featured, on various materials and unseen by many, so it really is quite a coup that we have this on our doorstep for such a generous stretch of time. Unit 44 has housed the work of several wonderfully gifted and insightful artists and this exclusive special addition will sit alongside past appearances from Roa, Jon Burgerman, Kid Acne, Remi/Rough and Stormie Mills to name but a few.

There will be a special preview event this Thursday to launch the exhibition, so please visit the Facebook event page for more details or hit up Danny@unit-44.com with any queries. Invitations are being hand delivered before the event so this is truly one not to be missed if you can help it.

You can also get further info/sign up to the Unit 44 newsletter (details of future exhibitions straight to your mailbox? How wonderfully convenient!) by heading over to www.unit-44.com.
